What Is The Future Of India's Startup Ecosystem?
In recent years, the advancement of India’s economy has been significantly driven by startups. The number of startups as well as startup investors in India in India has consistently been on the rise. Consequently, the startup ecosystem of the nation is exceptionally robust.
The Startup Ecosystem in India - Going From Strength to Strength
Startup investment in India has been growing by leaps and bounds. According to a report released by the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency, India holds the distinction of being the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world.
As of August 29 2022, India is home to more than 88,395 startups which have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. Not only have India's startups been creating ripples in various sectors, but they have also been contributing to the resolution of several national-level problems, ranging from inadequate access to healthcare to financial illiteracy.
As per the report cited above, India has startups engaged in problem-solving across 56 sectors. These include Information Technology Services, Education, Agriculture, Healthcare and Life Sciences, and Food and Beverages. The growth of India's startup ecosystem can be summarised by the following key statistics (between 2015 and August 2022):
1. A fifteen-prong rise in the number of startups 2. A nine-prong rise in the number of startup investors in India 3. A seven-prong rise in the number of startup incubators 4. An eight-prong rise in VC funding
The rise of unicorn startups in India
Another factor shining a bright light on the health of India's startup ecosystem is the number of unicorn startups, that is, startups that have attained a valuation in excess of $1 billion. As of December 2022, there are 108 unique startups in India. The combined valuation of the startups mentioned above is close to $345 Bn+
All this opens the playground for all types of investors for startups to invest in not just established fintech companies but also emerging fintech startups. It especially presents a unique opportunity for angel investors in India to capitalise on the hype and invest in fintech startups.
Not only is the number of startups attaining unicorn status steadily rising, but the rate at which India is producing unicorn startups is consistently on the rise too. Until 2016-17, the country was seeing one unicorn added to its startup ecosystem each year; since 2017-18, the number of unicorn startups in India has been rising at a YOY rate of 66%. These trends are harbingers of good fortune for the Indian startup ecosystem.
